Games and Market Day: Designing, Selling, and Playing at HMLC

Our final unit of the year invited learners to think like both game designers and entrepreneurs. We kicked things off by exploring a big question: What makes a good game? Through hands -on play and lots of lively discussion, learners identified the qualities that made games fun, engaging—or frustrating. It didn’t take long before new game ideas were bubbling up across the room.

Game design turned out to be an ideal way to blend creative expression with problem-solving and communication skills. Learners took on the challenge of developing clear, usable instructions for their games—sometimes learning the hard way just how tricky it can be to explain even something as simple as getting a drink of water! We practiced writing and revising directions, play-tested one another’s creations, and discovered that even the best ideas need refining.

As the unit progressed, the energy shifted toward entrepreneurship. Learners began planning products and marketing strategies for our very first HMLC Market Day. Some chose to keep working on their original games, while others launched new ventures entirely—from edible treats to handmade crafts. We explored techniques of advertising and persuasion, even practicing how to pitch products to a skeptical audience.

Market Day was a joyful culmination of all their hard work. Each learner set up a stall and brought their ideas to life, trading goods with visiting families using HMLC Bucks. From coasters and candle holders to a crowd-favorite product labeled “Freeze-Dried Water,” the creativity on display was remarkable.

This unit was a fitting end to the year—full of invention, laughter, problem-solving, and playful exchange. We can’t wait to see what our learners come up with next.
